What is Giclee Printing?
A giclee (zhee-CLAY), is an individually produced, high-resolution reproduction done on a special large format printer. Giclees are produced from digital scans of existing artwork or from digital files. Also, since many artists now paint only digitally, there was no "original" that can be hung on a wall. Giclees solve that problem, while creating a whole new vibrant medium for art.

Photographs can also be printed using the Giclee method of printing, These prints can be achieved by scanning of the original photo or from a digital file. Photos can be printed on glossy photo paper, satin photo paper, matte paper, even on fine art papers and canvas.

Giclees can be printed on any number of media, from canvas to watercolor paper to vinyl, to transparent acetates. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in nearly every way. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high-resolution that they are virtually 'continuous tone', rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithography, and details are crisper.

Since giclee printers can use media in rolls, large print sizes are available, limited only by the length and width of the roll.

Preparing your artwork for Giclee Printing
For optimum print quality prepare your art file in Adobe 1998 or sRGB colorspace, 16 bit or 8 bit, and save the file in an uncompressed format like PSD or TIFF with no compression and the DPI (dots per inch) should be set at 300dpi. To retain the maximum in fine detail and color graduations, work your file in 16 bit color depth. TIFF file format with 300dpi is the preferred method. TIFF files can be very large files. these files may need to be zipped or stuffed.
